Who’s running this?

I’m Janey Holliday. I’m an experienced mindset, life and business coach, and I’ve been in the wellbeing and coaching industry for 22 years.

With my upbeat, friendly, no-nonsense approach, I help people make changes easily and enjoyably. As a tight for time, single mum of three (and an SEN mum too), I’m brilliant at chunking the big stuff down.

I’ve been a mindset coach since 2012, and I’ve racked up more than 3,000 hours of coaching and have coached hundreds of happy women. Plus I’m currently completing my MASTER mindset coaching qualification too.

I’m always super-motivated with the things I love doing (my work being one of them!), but this year I’ve embarked on my own personal procrastination-busting journey. I’ve worked on:

  • The things I thought I was no good at.
  • The things I’ve previously had no time or energy for around my chaotic life.
  • The big decisions that I’ve been putting off but knew I’d need to make at some point. These were becoming alcohol free (for nearly seven months now!), and deregistering my daughter – who is autistic, and has ADHD and sensory processing disorder – from mainstream school to start our home education journey.

As I’ve learned from my training and my own experience, so many people struggle with procrastination. And  most don’t realise that overwhelm and stress are behind it. But when you work out how to push through it carefully, you always end up saying “I wish I’d done this sooner!”

 

The Procrastination low down

By definition, procrastination is an avoidance or delay of doing something.

It’s a gap between intention and action. And, even though we know it’s likely to harm us, procrastination is entirely voluntary – we choose to procrastinate.

We all do it, and some procrastination can be a good thing. But ongoing, neverending procrastination – whether it’s everyday put-it-offs that creep in day-to-day, or making huge, life-changing decisions – can cause us a huge amount of stress.

The stress of procrastination can impact our quality of life and even how long we live. This perpetual procrastination can actually cause mental and physical health issues too.

And it’s on the increase – although most haven’t joined up the dots on what’s behind this.

The result?

The more you procrastinate, the less you’re in command of your own life. Simple.

So many dreams and experiences, and our health, happiness and even time with loved ones are compromised by procrastination.

But most people don’t understand procrastination. If you’re a procrastinator, you are NOT:

  • Lazy
  • Demotivated.
  • A terrible person.

What makes things even worse is that if you beat yourself up about your procrastination patterns, ALL research shows that you’re actually perpetuating the problem!

We need to start looking at procrastination differently. Because – as you’ll know – once you push through the things you’ve been procrastinating over, you FEEL SO GOOD. Am I right?

The stress effect

In basic terms, procrastination is task aversiveness, caused by a stress response.

Either because of:

  • the stress YOU are creating with your unhelpful, out of control thoughts (what I call mental or mindset stress).

Or:

  • because of the stress caused by you doing too much in your life (actual stress, or an imbalanced life).

And when we’re stressed, we do one of three things: fight, flight or freeze.

Procrastination is freezing: being the rabbit in the headlights, hiding under the covers, hoping it will go away.

It’s often a story we tell ourselves, with the narrative that we’ll do it another time… tomorrow, when we feel more like it, when we have more time, when we’re ready.

But that hardly ever happens!

But procrastination is more layered than that.

It’s also caused by wanting to feel good. A short-term relief of the negative feelings we have created and associated around doing something. And with distraction pulls at an all-time high, there are plenty (too many!) feel-good-quick options around us.

There also may be a lack of self-regulation required to do something. Not because we’re not capable of doing it, not because we can’t self-regulate or because we don’t know the benefits of doing something… But because we’ve used all our self-regulation in bucket loads; doing all the other things required of us in other areas of our lives, or answering to the endless demands of those around us.

You’ll mostly have that voice “Why can’t you just do 30 mins of X at the end of the day?”. Er, it’s because you’re likely to be doing zillions of other things every hour of every day in your life that you’re not even consciously aware of.

So this means that – even though we’re capable when it comes to something we know we need to do, and we know it will benefit us – all we’re actually capable of are things like doom scrolling, watching Netflix, hitting the snooze button and the like!
